I am forever whining about how I don’t like live performances, and always prefer the studio sound. This performance blows that notion out of the water. It’s tight in the best of ways, but James Murphy’s vocals are so damn emotive it takes the song right where it needs to go. And the keyboardist with the glasses on and drumsticks in his back pocket is hereby my official Heading To Mid-Thirties Dance Paradigm. His one step hand-clap-fist-pump exudes the sort of muted bravado that my pasty white body was built to put out, now that I’m 32 and winded by any more physical exertion, and/or embarrassed by any dancing more expressive.
It doesn’t hurt that this song sounds like something Talking Heads wrote for New Order to play and Morrissey to sing. Takes me back to dancing in my bedroom with the volume on my Aiwa boombox days.
This is my 2010 summer jam. Kicking myself for not seeing Classixx at Smartbar, especially after hearing Nate Manic gush over him and his coming to Chicago for weeks. I’ll listen next time.
Falling in love hard with this song. And I’m sure i’m the millionth person to fall in love with the girl in this video. My word.
Four years ago I got the chance to do a poster/flier for one of my favorite artists: Metro Area. I was bowled over with the opportunity to get to create some sort of visual representation for music that very simply inspired the hell out of me. I think in the end it fell pretty flat.
Too much going on, too loose, and really unpolished.
I was happy to get a second chance for the Droog guys. I think this one – while still very rough around the edges colorwise, and perhaps texturewise – came much closer to the mark.
Some times it’s great when a client lets me come straight out of left field on a job. No direction, just lets me let loose. Even I’m not sure what’s going on here. It needed to be a quick turn around, and I’d been wanting to use this image of this dude for a while. And the moon. Why not.
Pop Lokken asked me to do a super quick job for a new downtempo mix album cover. I rummaged through some of my random photos and poof – Photoshop makes it happen.
